External CTO and part-time CTO for start-ups in need of genuine technical leadership
Senior technical leadership to ensure growth without technical debt or hasty decisions
We’ll talk about your start-up, where you’re at right now and your technical decisions. No strings attached and with complete honesty.
CTO for start-ups: when the product is moving forward, but nobody’s at the wheel
The software works, but there is no clear direction for the technical decisions.
Many start-ups grow with a product that ‘works’, but without any real technical direction: makeshift architectures, technical debt accumulating too early, costs spiralling out of control, and decisions that take their toll in the next funding round.
This is where the CTO service for start-ups comes in:Senior Technical Management
Strategic vision
A long-term approach without appointing a full-time CTO before the time is right.
CTO as a Service for funded start-ups
Less technical noise, more focus and peace of mind
Most start-ups don’t need to work longer hours. They need to make better decisions.
The same problems keep cropping up:
Architectures that do not scale
(or are too expensive to scale)
Technical decisions taken in a hurry
Infrastructure
that is either oversized or poorly designed
Lack of clear processes and vague priorities
Teams that move… but don’t make any progress
As a part-time CTO, I bring structure, context and vision where there is currently uncertainty.
What exactly does a part-time CTO do?
Technical guidance, vision and practical supportAs an external CTO, I do NOT offer you programming hours or code.
I offer you focus and peace of mind.
The Chief Technology Officer doesn’t just think – they make everything fit together, providing you with technical guidance across three clear levels:
01
Technical strategy
Think before you build
- A technical roadmap aligned with business and funding
- Clear decisions on what to build (and what not to build)
- Support at critical junctures: pivots, growth, funding rounds
02
Technical implementation
Let decisions be grounded in reality
- Pragmatic and sustainable architectural design
- Effective control of technical debt
- Definition of a stack with a focus on cost and maintainability
- Implementing CI/CD and best practice from the outset
03
Equipment and processes
That the team can function without relying on me
- Technical mentoring and leadership for the team
- Code reviews and quality standards
- Recruitment support (distinguishing genuine senior candidates from pretenders)
- Lightweight agile methodologies, free from unnecessary red tape
As an external CTO, I bring order where there is currently chaos
Who is the external CTO service for start-ups aimed at?
When the problem isn’t the equipment, but a lack of technical leadership.Start-ups with funding
Projects involving ENISA, CDTI, seed funding, friends and family, or other funding models that require sound technical decisions before the next funding round.
Non-technical founders
They need a trusted CTO who can translate business, product and metrics into concrete technical decisions.
Overworked technical founders
When coding, leading a team and defining strategy
can no longer be juggled in the same mind (or in the same week).
Small teams without senior leadership
Junior or mid-tier teams that are making progress, but without a clear technical framework to guide them.
You don’t need more code.
You need technical judgement.
Is it time to bring in senior technical leadership for your start-up?
If your start-up is growing and technical issues are starting to arise, a strategy session can help you gain clarity and avoid costly fixes.
What are the benefits of having a CTO for start-ups?
A direct impact on business, not just on technology.
As a founder, you get:
Peace of mind
Technical decisions make sense
Trust
You don’t have to rely on agencies or wing it
Control
Real-time visibility of technical status
Sustainable speed
Moving forward without jeopardising the future
Autonomy
The team is growing, and the external CTO won’t stay forever
And yes, there is an exit strategy.
Because a good CTO fosters autonomy, not dependence.
Why work with César Mauri as a CTO for start-ups?
Technical leadership with real-world experience and a focus on critical decisionsTechnical decisions when there is no margin for error
I work as an external CTO or part-time CTO for start-ups that need to make the right decisions at critical moments, rather than accumulating more code or more opinions.
Criteria developed in real-world environments
I bring not only technical expertise, but also judgement gained in situations of growth, pressure and change, where decisions come at a high cost.
A comprehensive overview of the start-up
Technology, product, team and funding are all interlinked. I work with a holistic approach that brings all the pieces together.
A pragmatic approach based on the phase
Early, post-seed or growth: each stage requires different decisions.
There are no one-size-fits-all solutions or trendy frameworks that can be applied out of context.
Less complexity, more robustness
Reducing technical complexity without compromising on quality or scalability is a competitive advantage, not a shortcut.
Honest support
If you don’t need a CTO as a Service, I’ll let you know. My job is to add value, not take up space.
What I’m not…
I do not operate as an agency.
I don’t sell execution capabilities without context, nor do I sell off-the-shelf packages that force your start-up to fit into a generic model.
I don’t operate as a ‘freelance senior resource’ who turns up, sets the programme and then disappears.
I don’t work blindly, nor do I simply put out fires without understanding the whole system or the implications of each decision…
What I do, though…
I act as CTO for start-ups, with real responsibility for the decisions taken in the medium and long term.
I provide technical guidance, sound judgement and context at times when making a mistake can prove costly.
I get involved in the architecture, the team and the technical strategy to ensure that everything fits together and moves forward in a meaningful way.
My aim is not to hold a role indefinitely, but to build technical autonomy: to ensure that the system runs smoothly, that the team grows, and that decisions are made with clarity, even when I am no longer here.
Does it make sense to bring in technical management to your company at this stage?
Not all start-ups need an external CTO at all times.
But there are stages when having senior technical leadership makes a real difference. Especially when:
The product is starting to become more complex
Technical decisions are beginning to shape the business
The team needs focus more than speed
A round, a change of phase or a significant pivot is on the horizon
At the moment…
An outside perspective from a senior figure can make all the difference.
